Game drives

Make memories that last a lifetime

Anyone who’s been on safari before knows that no two game drives are ever the same.

There are twice-daily game drives at Ulusaba, one leaving early in the morning and one leaving late afternoon, each lasting around three hours.

You’ll traverse over 13,500 hectares of private reserve with your dedicated ranger and tracker who will tailor your game drive just for you.

Sightings will vary depending on the season, but you should always keep your eyes peeled for the Big 5!

Morning and afternoon drives

Morning is generally the best time to spot wildlife, as the temperature is cool and the animals are still active, including the big cats, who’ll be returning from a night of hunting.

There’s also something special about the bush as the late afternoon light starts to fade. The animals stir from their daytime slumber and predators start stalking their prey. It's common to stop for sundowners as the sun sets - it's a magical experience!

The big 5 (and little 5)

The Big Five - lion, buffalo, leopard, elephant, and rhino - are among the most iconic and sought-after animals to encounter on safari. While the term once referred to the five most dangerous animals to track on foot, today it speaks to their presence, beauty, and significance in the wild. At Ulusaba, we’re privileged to view these remarkable animals within the protected Sabi Sand Nature Reserve, where conservation and respect for wildlife remain at the heart of every experience.

For those with a keen eye, the Little Five offer a delightful challenge: rhino beetles, elephant shrews, leopard tortoises, buffalo weavers, and ant lions. With the expertise of your ranger and tracker, you’ll have the chance to uncover these hidden treasures of the bush.

Safari walks

Depending on the weather, there’s usually a safari walk directly after breakfast. Your ranger and tracker will guide you, pointing out various birds and animals.

This is a great opportunity to see smaller creatures that are often missed when you’re on the game vehicles. We’ll also teach you some fascinating facts about the medicinal use of trees and plants along the way.

Photographic equipment rental

To capture those once-in-a-lifetime moments while out on a game drive, make sure to have the best photographic equipment to hand.

We have partnered with Africa Photographic Rentals to take the hassle out of hiring any camera equipment. Visit their website to place your order, and your equipment will be ready for you on arrival at Ulusaba. (Please be aware you will be leaving our website to make this booking.)

A typical day

Each day at Ulusaba is uniquely crafted to immerse you in the Ulusaba Magic, seamlessly blending adventure and relaxation. While there’s a general rhythm to life in the bush, surprises await at every turn, thanks to the ever-changing wonders of nature.

Timings and activities may vary with the seasons and are thoughtfully adjusted to suit our guests and the environment. We believe the best adventures are those with an element of surprise!

Morning journey

Start your day with the soft light of dawn and the promise of Africa. Early risers can enjoy a refreshing cup of coffee or tea before heading out on their morning game drive. Venture into the wilderness in an open 4x4 safari vehicle, guided by our skilled rangers and trackers, and witness the African bush as it wakes. Stops for refreshments amidst the wild are the perfect chance to soak in the tranquillity.

Breakfast and beyond

After an exciting morning of wildlife sightings, return to the lodge for breakfast with your ranger, where stories of the bush are shared. The rest of the morning is yours to enjoy - unwind with a rejuvenating treatment at our Aroma Boma Spa or immerse yourself in the natural surroundings during a bush walk with your guiding team.

Lunch and leisure

Yes, it’s time for more food! Savour a leisurely lunch before soaking up the African rays - whether you’re lounging by the pool, unwinding in your room, or enjoying quiet moments on our viewing decks to spot wildlife.

Afternoon adventures

Afternoon tea sets the stage for the next adventure, beginning with a game drive as the sun dips below the horizon. Sundowner drinks in the heart of the bush are a cherished ritual, and as darkness falls, the nocturnal world comes alive. Depending on the season and weather, you may end your drive at our Bush Observatory for a stargazing experience.

Evening escapades

As the night settles in and you return from your evening drive, dinner offers a feast for both the senses and the soul. Begin with a drink at the bar, sharing stories with the rangers, while the chef and host present the evening’s menu and thoughtfully selected wines. Every meal is a celebration of African flavours, and shared dining provides the perfect opportunity to relive the day’s adventures. For a more intimate setting, private dining can also be arranged.
