Things to do
Go beyond safari
A stay at Mahali Mzuri promises an unforgettable blend of adventure, culture, and relaxation. Embark on exhilarating game drives with our expert guides, witnessing breathtaking wildlife, or take to the skies on a magical hot air balloon safari for a bird’s-eye view of the endless savannah at sunrise. Immerse yourself in the rich traditions of the Maasai people, or simply unwind with a soothing spa treatment. Every moment at Mahali Mzuri is designed to inspire and delight.
Game Drives
At Mahali Mzuri, every game drive is a front-row seat to nature’s greatest show. Set out on twice-daily safaris - one at dawn and another in the golden afternoon light - to explore the vast Olare Motorogi Conservancy, home to an incredible variety of wildlife and bird species. From majestic lions and towering giraffes to elephants, cheetahs, and over 300 bird species, every drive is packed with unforgettable sightings.
For an even more exclusive adventure, opt for a night game drive and witness the secret world of the Mara after dark. Spot elusive nocturnal creatures like aardvarks, honey badgers, and bush babies under the stars. Time your visit between July and November to experience the jaw-dropping Great Migration, as thousands of wildebeest and zebra thunder across the plains, followed closely by predators in hot pursuit. It’s a safari experience like no other.
Bush walks
Step off the vehicle and into the wild with a guided walking safari in the Maasai Mara, an immersive experience that reveals nature in a way no game drive can. Led by an expert Maasai warrior guide, you’ll track animal footprints, uncover hidden flora and fauna, and gain deep insight into traditional Maasai knowledge of the land.
For those seeking a more active adventure, we offer a faster-paced option that doubles as an exhilarating bush workout. Complimentary and available on request, this unforgettable walk brings you closer to the pulse of the Mara: its rhythms, secrets, and ancient beauty. It’s an experience every safari lover should try at least once.
Excursions
For a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, soar above the Maasai Mara in a sunrise hot air balloon safari. Gently drift over the sweeping savannah as the golden light reveals herds of elephants, giraffes, and wildebeest below; an awe-inspiring perspective of the Mara few ever get to see. Your journey begins with a pre-dawn pick-up from Mahali Mzuri, followed by a scenic one-hour flight and a champagne breakfast in the bush, topped off with a leisurely game drive back to camp.
For a more grounded but equally enriching experience, immerse yourself in local Maasai culture with a visit to the colourful weekly market held every Thursday. Just 20 minutes from camp, this vibrant gathering is where Maasai traders barter for livestock, fresh produce, and beautiful handmade crafts. Easily combined with a morning game drive, it’s a meaningful way to connect with the community and experience the rhythms of Maasai life.
Community tours
Step beyond the safari and into the heart of Maasai culture with our enriching community tour. Begin your journey at a traditional manyatta (homestead), where you’ll meet local families, observe daily life, and enjoy vibrant cultural performances that showcase age-old traditions. You'll also visit Enkenju-Enkoirien Primary School, built by our charitable foundation Inua Jamii, where you’ll meet students and see firsthand how tourism is helping shape brighter futures. Proceeds from your tour directly support village families and fund student bursaries.
Continue your cultural immersion with a visit to The Maa Trust, a community-driven initiative focused on education, sustainability, and women’s empowerment. Explore the Trust’s bustling beading workshop, which supports over 100 local women artisans. Create your own handmade bracelet or necklace to take home; a meaningful souvenir and a symbol of your connection to this extraordinary community.
Life the Masaai-way
Perfect for families with teens, this action-packed experience invites you to channel your inner warrior with traditional Maasai games. Test your skills in spear and club throwing, and try your hand at archery using a bow and arrow, just like the Maasai have done for generations. This complimentary one-hour activity, located close to camp, is open to all guests aged 12 and above and offers a fun, hands-on way to connect with local culture.
As night falls over the Maasai Mara, budding astronomers can look to the heavens during our Maasai stargazing experience. Learn how the Maasai read the stars to guide their herds and mark the seasons, all while taking in the breathtaking brilliance of the Milky Way in one of the world’s most pristine night skies. It’s a magical blend of science, storytelling, and celestial wonder.

Activities at Mahali Mzuri
Game Viewing
Hot-air Balloon Safari - Hot air balloons, drifting serenely over the Mara, are a magical way to see and appreciate the grandeur of the landscape and the wildlife scattered across its plains. Although we don’t offer flights ourselves, we can arrange them for you on request through a third party for an additional charge. This once-in-a-lifetime experience starts with a 4 am pick up from our camp to ensure you are airborne to see the sunrise – an unforgettable sight that’s well worth getting out of bed for! It takes about 1hr – 1hr 30 mins to get to the take-off site, and the flight lasts around an hour. After your flight, you’ll be treated to a champagne breakfast and a game drive on the way back.
Bush Dining - Another unforgettable way to appreciate the bush is an outdoor bush dining experience. On request, we can set up a delicious bush breakfast or dinner for you at one of our spectacular locations around the conservancy. We have two designated bush dinner sites, one close to camp and another about 1km away. If you don’t fancy dining out in the bush, you could instead opt for sundowners at Lone Tree Hill - or a secret location known only to your guide. An experience not to be missed!
Community Tours & Excursions
Visit the Weekly Market - Every Thursday, generally between 10am and 3pm, the Maasai from the surrounding area bring their cattle, goats, and sheep to sell along with local produce. The market is about a 20-minute drive from camp, and a visit can easily be combined with your morning game drive. There is no charge, and we recommend taking some local currency to purchase items while you are there.
Visit the Maa Trust - The Maa Trust undertakes invaluable community projects around the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, from building schools and hospitals to rainwater harvesting tanks and troughs for cattle watering. They also play a critical role in supporting local female empowerment, notably helping to reduce the FGM of local Maasai girls. Inua Jamii supports the trust through contributions on behalf of each guest staying at the Mahali Mzuri camp. On this tour to learn more about the trust and its work, you’ll visit a commercial beading workshop that supports over 100 women from the local community, which is operated by the trust. The sophisticated Maasai beadwork requires expertise, but you can try your hand at making a simple bracelet or necklace to take home as a souvenir. The centre is 30-40 minutes’ drive away, and the trip is complimentary for guests
Back at Camp
Beyond the thrills of game drives, bush walks and meeting the colourful Maasai, there’s still plenty to do back at camp. All activities are included in your room rate unless otherwise mentioned.
Main Tent - When you’re not sipping drinks and watching the game from our terrace outside, you may feel like simply relaxing inside. Our Main Tent features an open but snuggly lounge area with a fireplace, a library of books, iPads, and a TV.
Swimming - If you feel like something more active, or just a refreshing dip after some time in the African bush, we have a 12-metre outdoor heated infinity pool with views out over the plains so you can wildlife watch from the water.
Nasaro Spa - What better way to relax in between game drives than at Nasaro, which means ‘refuge’ or ‘relaxation’ in Maa (the language of the Maasai). Nasaro is an intimate private spa treatment room located down near the valley floor - a secluded setting in which to be pampered with views out across the bush. A range of treatments is available, from hydrating facials to relaxing massages, perfect for dealing with travel fatigue or sore muscles post-gamedrive, and of course, those essential grooming rituals. We use a range of products from Africology, an eco-friendly brand whose ethical skin care products capture the rejuvenating and healing essence of Africa.
Shopping - Our onsite gift shop features a curated selection of locally-made arts, crafts, small gifts and clothing. It’s the perfect place to buy a little something for your friends, family or even yourself, and has all the bits and pieces you may need when on holiday.
Maasai Skills Game - If you (or your kids) fancy yourself as a Maasai warrior, you can test your skills by playing some traditional Maasai games. The games involve spear and club throwing, and bow and arrow archery, Maasai style. Anyone over 12 years old can participate. This complimentary 1-hour activity is available on request, and takes place at the outdoor earth tennis court near the camp.
Star Gazing the Maasai Way - The Mara’s sky at night is studded with a billion stars, with no light pollution to dull what is a truly breathtaking sight. Our stargazing experience allows you to not only appreciate the magnificence of the Milky Way but also to learn the Maasai’s traditional way of understanding the night sky. This complimentary, hour-long experience takes place at a special site near the camp’s helipad, subject to the weather and the availability of a Maasai guide.
