Things to do
Ulusaba Private Game Reserve is located in the western sector of the Sabi Sand Reserve. We're close to Kruger National Park which is in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa.
Ulusaba is approximately a 1 hour and 20 minute flight from the international airport in Johannesburg (JNB) flying by twin-engine aircraft, or 30 minutes from Nelspruit (MQP) and 20 minutes from Skukuza (SZK), via a charter air hop, which are the best airports to use if travelling from other destinations within South Africa. We have our own private Ulusaba airstrip (ULX) and there are daily scheduled and charter flights available. Get a window seat - the view’s terrific!
You can also come by road too from Nelspruit, which will take about 2 hours and 30 minutes. Try and arrive by 1pm - just in time for lunch! Driving instructions can be found below.
Ulusaba Self Drive Directions
Please note that the drive will take approximately 6 hours (± 500km)
Take the N4/N12 to Nelspruit. Follow the R40 from Nelspruit through White River to
Hazyview. Hazyview is about 60km from Nelspruit.
As you approach Hazyview there is a T-Junction. Turn left at this junction. This road will take you into Hazyview Town. Carry on straight through the first set of traffic lights. At the intersection with the second set of traffic lights, there will be a signpost that reads Paul Kruger Gate. At this signpost, turn right. This road is the R536.
After approximately 32km there are signposts for Newington Gate on the left hand side of the road. There will also be signs indicating ‘Huntington, Lilydale & Justicia’. Turn left and follow the gravel road for 9km until you come to a four way stop. Turn right and follow the road for another 3km to Newington Gate which is where you will enter the Sabi Sand Reserve. From Newington Gate follow all signposts for 17km to Ulusaba.
Please note that the drive will take approximately 1½ hours (± 35km)
Follow the R536 to Hazyview. After approximately 8km there will be a signpost for
Newington Gate where you will need to turn right onto a gravel road. Follow the gravel road for 9km until you come to a four way stop. Turn right and follow the road for another 3km to Newington Gate which is where you will enter the Sabi Sand Reserve. From Newington Gate follow all signposts for 17km to Ulusaba.
Fee effective from 2018: R280 vehicle entrance and R120 per passenger (subject to change). Debit and Credit Card (Visa and Mastercard) facilities are available at Newington Gate.
The entrance fee helps ensure this rare conservation area can be preserved in its current form. Some of the current core projects which receive a proportion of this fee include:
• A substantial investment by the Sabi Sand Wildtuin into improving its security operations in the immediate term to combat the unprecedented (and rising) level of rhino poaching. Security in general will also be enhanced on the reserve
• The improvement and maintenance of the reserve’s perimeter fence to minimise potential for human-wildlife conflict
Please contact Ulusaba’s Reception on +27 (0)13 735 5460 should you need any further information. Unfortunately Google Maps does not display the exact location for Ulusaba so please do follow the instructions above or you might end up at the wrong watering hole!
We’ve got private airstrip and your Ranger and Tracker will be waiting for you with cold bubbles – the perfect way to start your Ulusaba experience. Federal Air flies directly to Ulusaba's airstrip but there are also options to fly via Nelspruit or Skukuza Airports, with onwards hops to Ulusaba's airstrip.
