Mallorca for all seasons

When to visit Mallorca

Traditionally known as a summer holiday destination, visiting Mallorca during quieter times feels like a well-kept travel secret. With a feeling of calm descending on the island, temperatures still hitting double digits regularly and delicious warming gourmet treats on offer, there are plenty of reasons to consider this Balearic jewel for an off season getaway. Make Son Bunyola Hotel & Villas your base and discover how to make the most of Mallorca year round.

Things to do in spring in Mallorca

The almond blossom season marks the (early) arrival of spring in Mallorca. Throughout February across the island’s eastern and central regions almond trees burst into blossom, transforming the landscape into a stunning sight to behold. With large concentrations of almond trees in and around Son Bunyola guests are guaranteed a front row seat to this spectacle. For more nature in action, head to the Parc Natural de s’Albufera, near Alcudia, which during spring becomes a transit station for huge flocks of flamingos, kestrels, and storks.

With days getting longer and temperatures rising, sporting enthusiasts can hit one of the island’s 20 Championship golf courses or follow in the footsteps of Mallorca’s famous son Rafa Nadal and take to the tennis court at Son Bunyola.

Foodies are also well catered for with spring the ideal time to secure at table at one of Mallorca’s Michelin-starred restaurants, often booked out over the Summer. Alternatively, head to the capital to browse the many stalls at Mercat de 'Olivar, a hotspot for fresh produce from across the island or stroll along the waterfront and stop for delicious tapas at Mercat 1930, one of Palma’s newest food markets.

Things to do in autumn in Mallorca

A sweet spot between the hot summer months and crisper winter months, the autumnal season is perfect for hitting Mallorca’s many hiking trails and spectacular cycling routes. Son Bonyula is ideally situated to explore the many walking paths in the Tramuntana mountain range, while one of the island’s most spectacular cycling routes can be found right on the estate’s doorstep. Don’t forget to pack the sunscreen though as while the temperatures may be a tad cooler, the sun is still strong.

Autumn also marks the start of the harvest season with festivals taking place all over the island, celebrating local produce such as almonds and pine nuts while across Mallorca’s wineries visitors will be able to witness the annual grape picking.

Spending time on the beach isn’t just a summer activity in Mallorca. Days are warm, popular beaches are quieter and throughout September and October the water temperatures are still ideal for swimming so make sure to leave some space in your luggage for swimming trunks and bathing suits.

Things to do in winter in Mallorca

Take advantage of this quieter period to visit many of Mallorca’s cultural and historical attractions without the crowds. Head for Palma and explore its beautiful town centre with its many narrow streets, admiring architectural gems along the way before stepping inside one of the capital’s many cosy cafes and bars to warm up with hot chocolate and an ensaïmada – Mallorca’s iconic delicious, sweet bread pastry.

Tour Palma’s magnificent gothic Cathedral La Seu, particularly magical during the festive season or head to the Miró Foundation in the capital’s Cala Major neighbourhood and wander around the artist’s former workshops admiring many surrealist works.

Make sure to plan a day trip to Valdemossa – just a 30 minute drive from Son Bunyola – to take in the spectacular vistas of the snow-capped Tramuntana mountains before visiting this enchanting town, once home to composer Frederic Chopin and French writer George Sand and where the local museum dedicated to them still holds Chopin’s piano.
