The news from Necker

Happy New Year everyone! 2011 on Necker Island saw plenty of ups and downs, with the devastating August fire turning everything on its head, but the year ended on a truly happy note, with Richard Branson's daughter Holly marrying her fiance Fred Andrewes on the ruins of the former Great House. A special temporary flooring was laid, a marquee was set up, and the setting couldn't have been more perfect!
Planning for the successor to the Great House got underway almost immediately, and with Holly's wedding by all accounts a huge success, our attention now turns to the reconstruction effort. The next step is to remove the existing foundations as they will need to be replaced to support the new structure, and this will be taking place in January, February and early March 2012, when the island will be closed to guests. This new Beach Pavilion will be larger than the Tennis Pavilion it replaces, and will feature an expansive common area on the ground floor, with an impressive bar, lots of seating, space for game tables, and a huge sofa that is 26 feet long - that's 8 metres! The sofa will be positioned in front of a massive flat screen TV - perfect for catching up on the latest DVDs or for just relaxing in the shade when the sun's at its hottest. The new Beach Pavilion will be completed in April this year and we can't wait for what will be a fantastic addition to the island. We'll be sure to keep you updated on all the progress throughout 2012 so keep checking here for updates!
