Mont Rochelle News: Peter goes to Mont Rochelle

Restaurant Manager, Peter Avis took some time out of his busy schedule working at Babylonto visit the food and wine capital of the world, Franschhoek.

This was no holiday, he was out there to sprinkle a bit of Babylon's magic dust on our newest property Mont Rochelle and make sure the team were in tip top condition ready for the opening at the beginning of September. Check out Peter's tales of his South African adventure below.

Mont Rochelle CellarI have been so lucky over the past 13 years to be able to work and experience Virgin Limited Edition's unique portfolio of properties all over the world, so I really could not wait to experience the newest addition to the family, Mont Rochelle and it really did not disappoint!

I arrived at the airport and was picked up by Mont Rochelle's driver, Abby. He was so warm and welcoming. The drive through Cape Town, Stellenbosch and onto Franschhoek was simply stunning with the most amazing scenery.

All the indicators were there that this was a Virgin Limited Edition property. From the stunning location and views to the warm and passionate welcome from the team, even the Mont Rochelle duck made an appearance in the bathroom!

The outside heated pool and spa have been refurbished to such a high standard I just wanted to jump swim and book in a massage, but that would have to wait as I have a job to do! I met with the General Manager, Dalene who showed me around. The main restaurant, Miko has a modern feel that is complemented by the beautiful panoramic views of the Franschhoek valleys and vineyards. Country Kitchen joins up to the wine cellar and is an ideal place for an informal dining experience. After a couple more meetings and a really great dinner at Miko with Dalene I was ready for bed! Mont Rochelle poolI woke the next morning and joined the breakfast team at Miko. It was really nice getting to know them and seeing how things work, it has the same feel as Babylon as the team are so, so friendly and welcoming and so I instantly felt part of the team. After breakfast we did training before we got ready for lunch service. Then it was on to my favourite part of the day, cocktail training! I really enjoyed making these and of course trying all the cocktails with the team! I only had six full days at Mont Rochelle, so each day was really full on from breakfast until the evening. I found each day really exciting with lots to-do apart from working with the team. I got to meet some of our great guests as well as a visit to the town, which has so much going on from simply stunning vineyards and winery's to visit, as well as some other outstanding restaurants. I highly recommend Le Quartier Francais and Foliage really great dining experiences. Miko RestaurantAs you can tell I had a really great time at Mont Rochelle and would recommend you visit sometime soon!
