Community

The local communities in which we reside are at the heart of all we do and are hugely important to each one of our properties, so for every decision we make, we think about the impact we are causing. This includes working to protect the wildlife and habitat as well as community projects.

We always recruit staff as locally as possible, to provide jobs and income for local people and to positively impact the communities in which we operate.

Education

We are proud to support children and young adults in local communities with funding, resources, and quality education.

Both Ulusaba and Mahali Mzuri have built local primary schools, providing a safe learning environment and access to essential resources for children.

Kasbah Tamadot, through the Eve Branson Foundation, offers artisan craft-making skills at the Tamgounssi Weaving Centre and Tansghart Woodwork Centre, providing young individuals with lifelong skills and employment opportunities.

Supply chain

Wherever possible we support local suppliers, charities, and entrepreneurs.

At Mahali Mzuri, we collaborate with a local charity that empowers Maasai women to create traditional beaded coasters and placemats, providing them with a steady income.

At Kasbah Tamadot and Son Bunyola, we source bathmats, table linen, and other artisanal items from the Eve Branson Foundation.

The Lodge champions sustainable cuisine, using dairy products from cows grazing on nearby mountains in summer, foraging from hedgerows to create preserves and sourcing meat from the neighbouring town of Le Châble.

Sourcing locally

When it comes to our food, we like to showcase the best of what our locations have to offer and favour home-grown produce wherever possible. Our chefs work closely with nearby suppliers and morning markets to source fresh and seasonal ingredients, celebrating local cuisine.

We grow our own herbs and vegetables and raise free-range chickens adding that home-grown touch to our menus.

To help minimise landfill impact, leftovers are composted or used to feed our many animals.

Conservation 

We are lucky to have properties in a range of breathtaking locations, and our teams are passionate about preserving the natural beauty and environmental resources that surround them.  

We actively contribute to biodiversity, so you’ll now find beehives buzzing with activity at Mahali Mzuri, Ulusaba, Kasbah Tamadot, and Son Bunyola.  

Our commitment extends to protecting local wildlife that can be seen on safari. We monitor animals' health and help protect them from poachers. We also take action to promote the regeneration of ecosystems, replanting mangroves in the British Virgin Islands. 

Energy efficiency

It’s our mission to reduce our energy consumption and embrace renewable sources. Across our collection, we already use a mix of renewable energy sources.

Kasbah Tamadot and Mahali Mzuri use solar panels to heat their outdoor swimming pools, reducing oil consumption by 40% in a year.

Ulusaba also harnesses the power of the sun with solar panels generating electricity and hot water, while Necker Island has wind turbines and a solar farm, allowing the island to be without generators for 90% of the time, reducing carbon emissions by 2.5 tonnes daily.

And we’re not stopping there! We’re dedicated to investing in additional technology and infrastructure to further reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.

Reducing, reusing and recycling

Creating positive change for both the environment and our communities is what we’re all about.

Our teams minimise single-use plastics and landfill waste. On Necker Island, we work with a company that transforms plastic waste from the ocean into our team’s uniforms and repurpose old uniforms into laundry bags.

At Ulusaba, we donate old linen to a local disability charity, who skilfully repurpose them into slippers and bathrobes for our guests to use.
