Last week our Head Gardener Pilar was delighted to be joined in the Gardens by a team of apprentices from social enterprise, Streetscape. The apprentices were treated to an exclusive tour of the Gardens with Pilar; learning all about our unique history and meeting our resident wildlife!
Streetscape is an award winning social enterprise, providing gardening apprenticeships to 18-25 year olds who are long-term unemployed. Streetscape helps build the skills, experience and attributes they need to fulfill their dreams and move into work. Each of the Streetscape apprentices is currently undertaking a 15-month apprenticeship working towards a Level 2 Diploma in Work-based Horticulture.
The apprentices kicked off their morning with a tour of the Gardens, before a Q&A session with Pilar who was able to answer questions on pursuing a career in the exciting world of gardening. Having worked in various period gardens before taking up the position of Head Gardener at The Roof Gardens in 2015, Pilar was certainly able to give a lot of insights to the apprentices – as well as some tips on the challenges gardeners can face (including avoiding scratches from pesky Brambles!)
You can find out more about Streetscape and their work growing lives on their website.
